Semi crash shut down northbound I-196
A crash involving a semi and a road maintenance vehicle shut down northbound I-196 Monday, Sept. 21, while crews cleared the wreckage.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened about 2:40 p.m. near 109th Avenue in Casco Township. No one was hurt.
A Michigan Department of Transportation crew was patching the highway when the semi hit the crew’s truck and trailer. The semi jackknifed into the median, and deputies warned that cleanup would take an extended period.
In an afternoon alert, the Allegan County Sheriff's Office directed northbound traffic off I-196 at exit 26. The detour followed Blue Star Highway north to the entrance ramp at exit 30.
Michigan law on passing road maintenance vehicles
Michigan law requires extra caution when approaching and passing a stopped road maintenance vehicle displaying flashing, rotating or oscillating amber lights. Under MCL 257.653b, drivers on public roads need to slow to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit and move at least one lane or two vehicle widths away from the stopped vehicle, unless police direct otherwise.
If there are fewer than two lanes going the same direction, or weather, road conditions or nearby vehicle or pedestrian traffic prevent moving over, drivers must proceed cautiously and reduce their speed by 10 mph.
