Pedestrian killed on Seaway Drive in Norton Shores
A 23-year-old died after being hit by multiple vehicles while walking along a highway Tuesday morning.
The Norton Shores Police and Fire departments responded about 7 a.m. Nov. 3 to eastbound Seaway Drive near Grand Haven Road. The pedestrian was found in the left lane and died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Initial reports indicated the person had jumped from a vehicle, but investigators determined after speaking with witnesses that they had been walking along the highway when they were hit.
Witnesses reported that one of the vehicles may have hit the pedestrian and left without reporting the crash. Police are working to identify and locate that vehicle.
Michigan State Police and Life Ambulance assisted at the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call the Norton Shores Police Department at 231-733-2691 or Silent Observer at 231-72-CRIME.
Insurance claims when a hit-and-run driver is unknown
Optional uninsured motorist coverage may pay damages after a hit-and-run crash, including one involving a pedestrian, if the injured person qualifies as an insured and the crash meets the policy's terms. Michigan Legal Center's explanation of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage discusses coverage limits and policy conditions that can affect payment.
Policy deadlines vary. In DeFrain v. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., the Michigan Supreme Court enforced a policy's 30-day notice requirement for a pedestrian hit-and-run claim even without proof that the delay harmed the insurer. Notify any potentially applicable insurer promptly and ask a lawyer to review its hit-and-run reporting and coverage requirements.
