Pedestrian critically injured in Lenawee County crash

A 36-year-old Adrian man suffered critical injuries after being hit by Jeep while walking in the roadway Tuesday night.

Michigan State Police Monroe Post troopers responded about 8:08 p.m. Oct. 20 to Rome Road near Wilkinson Highway in Lenawee County. Their preliminary investigation found that the man and the Jeep Cherokee were both heading west when the vehicle hit him.

The Jeep was driven by a 40-year-old Hillsdale woman with a juvenile passenger. Neither occupant was injured and both declined medical treatment at the scene.

The man was taken by ambulance to a Henry Ford hospital in Jackson. Rome Road was closed for several hours during the investigation.

The Lenawee County Sheriff's Department, Lenawee Community Ambulance, Cambridge Township Fire Department/EMS and Lenawee County Central Dispatch assisted.

Troopers said alcohol is not suspected to be a factor. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact Trooper Lowry Rains at 734-242-3500.

Michigan laws for walking along a road

Under MCL 257.655, pedestrians must stay off the road when sidewalks are available to use. Where there are no sidewalks, pedestrians must walk on the left side facing the nearest traffic when practicable.

Drivers also have duties. Michigan law requires a careful and prudent speed that accounts for traffic, the road surface and other conditions, with enough distance to stop within the clear roadway ahead. A pedestrian's presence in the road doesn't by itself settle who is responsible for a crash.

An injured person's share of fault can reduce compensation. For motor vehicle claims seeking pain and suffering damages, being more than 50% at fault bars recovery of those damages. Michigan Legal Center's explanation of personal injury cases in Michigan discusses the claims and shared-fault issues that can arise after an injury.
