Pedestrian critically injured in Flint hit-and-run
A pedestrian was critically injured in a reported hit-and-run early Sunday in Flint.
In an Aug. 9 post by the Flint Police Department, the department said its Traffic Bureau responded about 2:17 a.m. to James P. Cole Boulevard between Oregon and Alabama avenues.
Police said officers were investigating an unrelated crash when a gray 2012 Chevrolet Corvette struck the man, who was on foot. The preliminary investigation found that the Corvette was traveling at a high rate of speed and left without stopping.
The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition.
Investigators believe the Corvette will have significant damage to its front right corner. Police said the vehicle had a male driver and a male passenger.
Traffic investigators were processing evidence and reviewing surveillance footage, according to police.

Michigan law can separate insurance benefits and civil claims after a pedestrian crash. A person injured while not occupying a motor vehicle generally must claim personal injury protection (PIP) benefits through the assigned claims plan, subject to the exception identified in MCL 500.3115.

A possible civil claim against an at-fault driver follows different standards. MCL 500.3135 permits tort liability for noneconomic loss only when the injured person has death, a serious impairment of body function or a permanent serious disfigurement. A police investigation does not affect the outcome of insurance and civil issues.
