One dead after four-vehicle I-94 crash in Detroit, police say
One person died after a pileup crash involving four vehicles late Saturday.
Michigan State Police troopers responded to the crash at about 10:54 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, on westbound Interstate 94 near Brush Street in Detroit. A preliminary investigation found several cars were driving at a high rate of speed before a chain-reaction collision, police said.
Police did not identify the person who died or disclose whether anyone else was injured. The crash remains under investigation.
“This serves as another tragic reminder of the dangers of excessive speed,” Michigan State Police said in a post on X. “Speeding significantly reduces your ability to react and increases the severity of crashes.”
Michigan law after a fatal crash?
Michigan is a no-fault state, which means that an injured person may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without having to determine whose fault an accident is. MCL 500.3105
These benefits can help cover economic losses for injuries caused by the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.
Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This would only be an option if the injuries meet the state’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death.
Michigan’s wrongful death statute, MCL 600.2922, applies when a death was caused by a wrongful act, neglect or fault.
