Man killed in Brighton Township rollover on I-96
A 24-year-old Dexter man died after his car overturned in a ditch early Saturday, Oct. 31.
Michigan State Police Brighton Post troopers responded around 3:15 a.m. to eastbound I-96 near U.S. 23 in Brighton Township. Livingston County Central Dispatch had received an iPhone crash notification.
Troopers found a Ford Focus hatchback overturned in the ditch. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the car had left the freeway and entered the ditch. "The circumstances surrounding why the vehicle left the roadway remain unknown," state police said.
Police believe alcohol contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Douglas Ryan at the Brighton Post at 810-227-1051.
Michigan no-fault benefits after a fatal single-vehicle crash
Michigan no-fault benefits don't require proof that another driver caused the crash. When coverage applies, personal injury protection can provide financial help after a fatal crash, including benefits for eligible dependents.
Under MCL 500.3108, survivor's loss benefits can replace financial support that dependents would have received from the person who died. They can also cover reasonably incurred expenses for ordinary and necessary services the person would have performed for those dependents, up to $20 a day. Benefits aren't payable beyond the first three years after the crash and are subject to an overall limit per 30-day period that is adjusted annually.
Funeral and burial expenses are a separate no-fault benefit, subject to the amount specified in the policy. Eligibility and statutory exclusions still matter, as Michigan Legal Center explains in its overview of Michigan personal injury protection benefits.
