Man dies in Flint Township semi-truck crash

A 27-year-old Burton man died at the scene of a semi collision Friday morning.

The Flint Township Police Department said officers responded around 6 a.m. Oct. 16 to the intersection of West Bristol and Torrey roads.

The department's preliminary investigation found he was driving west on Bristol Road when he hit a semi-truck turning onto Bristol Road and became trapped beneath the trailer.

The truck driver, a 63-year-old Mount Morris man, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The intersection was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The Flint Township Fire Department, Genesee County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police crash reconstruction team assisted.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Once it is complete, the case will go to the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office for review and a decision on possible charges.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact Detective Sleva at 810-600-3250.

What duties do Michigan truck drivers have when turning?

Drivers must first make sure a turn can be made safely and give the required signal under MCL 257.648. A turn signal warns other drivers but doesn't establish that the way is clear.

A semi-truck's trailer follows a different path from its cab. The Michigan Commercial Driver License Manual explains that the rear wheels track inside the front wheels during a turn. Drivers need enough clearance for the entire vehicle, including the trailer.

Vehicle positions, signals and the turning path help establish responsibility. Michigan Legal Center explains how these details affect fault in Michigan wide-turn truck crashes.
