Mackinac Bridge reopens after crash seriously injures two

The Mackinac Bridge reopened Wednesday morning after a two-vehicle crash injured multiple people.

Michigan State Police preliminary investigation found that both vehicles were headed south on the bridge when one rear-ended the other. The crash was reported at 3:24 a.m. Sept. 23, by Michigan Department of Transportation.

Traffic resumed shortly before 8 a.m.

Does a rear-end crash automatically establish fault in Michigan?

No. MCL 257.402 treats a qualifying rear impact as initial evidence of negligence by the rear driver in Michigan. But the collision does not by itself establish final responsibility. The owner of the struck vehicle can't invoke the rule if the collision occurred between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise and that vehicle lacked a light reasonably visible from behind.
