M-52 closed Chelsea, head-on crash leaves one critically injured

Part of M-52 near Chelsea was closed Thursday afternoon after a head-on crash left one person critically injured.

Two vehicles were in a head-on crash around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, June 25, on M-52, said Robert Arbini, chief of the Chelsea Fire Department.

According to Marc Breckenridge, a spokesperson for Huron Valley Ambulance, one person was taken by Survival Flight to University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition, and another person was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The crash closed M-52 in both directions between I-94 and Jerusalem Road in Sylvan Township around 11:40 a.m., according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours while police investigated the crash.

Legal Options After a Head-On Crash in Michigan

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means people injured in a crash may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without first proving who caused the crash.

These benefits can help cover economic losses from the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.

Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This may be an option if the injuries meet Michigan’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death under MCL 500.3135.
