I-96 ramp reopens after semi rollover in Ingham County

A semi rollover closed an I-96 ramp overnight Monday in Ingham County, but the ramp reopened Tuesday morning.

The ramp from westbound I-96 to southbound U.S. 127 was closed from 11 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, until about 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. Ingham County Sheriff's Office deputies said the driver suffered minor injuries.

Multiple tow trucks and sheriff's deputies responded to the crash. Deputies said drugs, speed and alcohol were not factors.

Cargo securement rules for commercial trucks

Cargo can create a rollover risk even if it doesn't fall off of or out of a trailer. Commercial trucks subject to federal cargo rules, 49 CFR 393.100 requires loads to be contained or secured so they can't shift enough to affect the truck's stability or handling. The requirement also applies to enclosed trailers.

Michigan Legal Center's explanation of shifting or falling truck cargo describes how loading practices and the parties responsible for securing a load can affect a Michigan injury claim.
