I-75 reopens after semi-truck crash near Schaefer Road

Southbound I-75 reopened Wednesday morning after a semi-truck crash blocked all lanes near Schaefer Road.

Michigan State Police troopers responded about 7 a.m. Nov. 4. Their preliminary investigation found that the truck lost control and hit the left median wall.

Traffic was diverted onto the right shoulder while troopers investigated and crews worked to clear the roadway.

State police said, “Rain and speed are believed to be contributing factors in this crash.”

In a 9:50 a.m. update, state police said all southbound lanes had reopened and urged drivers to continue using caution.

Truck drivers’ duties in rain

Michigan’s basic speed law requires drivers to choose a careful, reasonable speed for traffic and road conditions and to travel slowly enough to stop within the clear distance ahead. A posted limit isn’t always a safe speed, a distinction Michigan Legal Center explains in Michigan speeding accidents: Proving speed and fault.

For commercial vehicles subject to federal safety rules, 49 CFR 392.14 requires extra caution and reduced speed when rain or other hazardous conditions impair visibility or traction. If conditions become too dangerous, drivers must stop operating until safe travel is possible. If complying would increase the danger to passengers, the rule allows travel to the nearest place where passenger safety is assured.
