I-696 reopens after three-car crash in Warren
Eastbound I-696 reopened Monday after a three-car crash temporarily closed all eastbound lanes.
The Michigan Department of Transportation reported the crash at 2:20 p.m. Oct. 19. Michigan State Police said three cars were involved near Fairfield in Warren.
The closure began at Mound Road while police investigated. Whether anyone was injured remained unclear.
How is fault divided in a Michigan multi-vehicle crash?
More than one driver can share legal responsibility when their conduct contributed to a crash and the resulting losses. Being involved in a collision doesn't, by itself, establish fault.
Under MCL 600.6304, a judge or jury deciding fault considers both what each person did and how closely that conduct is connected to the claimed injuries or property damage. Responsibility isn't automatically split equally among the drivers.
Michigan Legal Center's guide to multi-vehicle and chain-reaction crashes explains how the order of impacts can help establish each driver's role.
