Driver seriously injured in Hopkins Township crash

A driver was hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening in Hopkins Township.

The Allegan County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened just before 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at 130th Avenue and 18th Street.

Investigators said an eastbound driver failed to yield, leading to serious injuries, the sheriff's office said. The other driver and a passenger weren't hurt.

Authorities said that not wearing a seatbelt might have led to worse injuries for the driver. The intersection closed while crews investigated and cleared the scene but has reopened.

Can an at-fault driver receive Michigan no-fault benefits?

Yes, if the driver is otherwise eligible. Michigan law provides personal injury protection (PIP) benefits without regard to fault, so causing a crash doesn't by itself bar benefits for accident-related injuries.

Depending on coverage and statutory limits, benefits can pay for reasonably necessary medical care, lost wages and help with household tasks the injured person can no longer perform. Eligibility restrictions still apply. For example, an owner or registrant of a vehicle involved in a crash is barred from these benefits if that vehicle lacked its required insurance.

Michigan Legal Center's explanation of Michigan car accident medical bills and PIP priority describes how available coverage and the insurer responsible for payment are determined.
