Driver dies after pickup hits U.S. 31 overpass

A 23-year-old Norton Shores man died Thursday after his pickup hit a concrete overpass pillar and caught fire in Shelby Township.

The crash was reported about 9:19 a.m. Sept. 24 on U.S. 31 at the Hayes Road overpass. The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

The preliminary investigation showed a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado left the northbound lanes, crossed the median and hit the pillar head-on. Emergency responders found the truck on fire and pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
