Car crashes into Warren pond during apparent police chase

A car flipped and landed in a pond Monday during a police chase.

The crash happened around noon Oct. 26 near Groesbeck Highway and 11 Mile Road in Warren.

Aerial footage showed the car at the pond's edge with police nearby. It wasn't clear whether anyone was injured or what led to the apparent chase.

What limits apply to police pursuits in Michigan?

Michigan allows drivers of authorized emergency vehicles to depart from some traffic rules while pursuing someone suspected of breaking the law. Under MCL 257.603, an officer may pass a red light or stop sign only after slowing as needed for safe operation. The statute also permits exceeding certain speed limits only when doing so doesn't endanger life or property.

The vehicle must display the required flashing red or blue light, and its driver must sound an audible warning as reasonably necessary. Police can retain these exemptions without an audible warning when an emergency run requires silence.

Emergency driving privileges and liability for a crash are separate questions. Michigan Legal Center's overview of police chase crashes in Michigan explains the different claims that may arise when a fleeing vehicle or police cruiser causes an injury.
