Car crashes into Detroit home
A car crashed into a Detroit home Sunday, leaving a father and his two young children uncertain where they would stay.
The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at a house on Prevost Street on the city's west side. No one was in the room the car hit.
The family had recently moved into the house after leaving Kentucky following a house fire. They had been living in their car before finding housing. The father said he was looking for a place to stay with his children, ages 2 and 4, and their dog.
Michigan insurance coverage when a car hits a house
Michigan's property protection insurance can cover accidental damage a motor vehicle causes to someone else's home in Michigan, subject to statutory conditions and exclusions. Under MCL 500.3121, qualifying benefits are payable regardless of fault and can include compensation for losing the use of damaged property.
Benefits cover the lesser of reasonable repair costs or replacement costs minus depreciation, plus the value of lost use when applicable. Payments under one policy for all property damaged in a single accident cannot exceed $1 million.
Obtaining the vehicle's insurance information helps identify where to report a property claim. Michigan Legal Center's explanation of what to do after a Michigan car accident describes what insurance details to gather and how to get the police report number.
