77-year-old driver critically injured after crashing into tree

Oakland County crash leaves 77-year-old Northville woman with critical injuries.

The accident took place on Gunn Road at around 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver was driving a 2016 Volvo XC70 eastbound on Gunn Road when they attempted to pass other vehicles while approaching a curve in the road. According to the Sheriff's Office, as she maneuvered around traffic, she swerved to avoid a bicyclist who was traveling westbound.

She lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and struck a tree, becoming stuck inside the car.

The trapped driver was extricated by emergency responders. The woman was transported to Henry Ford Rochester Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. A 12-year-old passenger, who is from Bruce Township in Macomb County, was not hurt.

Legal options after an accident

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means that without having to determine whose fault an accident is, people injured in the crash may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits.

These benefits can help cover economic losses from the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.

Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This would only be an option if the injuries meet the state’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death.
