18-year-old charged after fatal Hyde crash in Delta County
An 18-year-old faces four charges after a crash in Hyde killed a young woman and injured another driver early Sunday.
The Delta County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded about 12:40 a.m. Oct. 11 to I Road and U.S. 2. Initial reports indicated a vehicle was on fire and people were trapped.
Investigators said a truck failed to stop at the intersection and hit a car on U.S. 2. An 18-year-old woman riding in the truck was ejected and later found dead. The car’s driver, an 18-year-old man, was taken to a hospital for his injuries.
Deputies alleged that the truck’s driver fled on foot. After a search involving several agencies, officers found the suspect under a bridge about two miles away around 8:40 a.m. Sunday. He received treatment for injuries and was taken to the Delta County Jail.
The sheriff’s office said he was arraigned on the following charges:
- reckless driving causing death
- reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function
- two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death
Bond was set at $250,000. The charges are allegations, and the crash remains under investigation.
Michigan drivers’ duties after a serious crash
A driver’s duty to stop does not depend on who caused the crash. Under MCL 257.617, a driver who knows or has reason to believe they were involved in a crash on property open to public travel must stop and stay to fulfill the required information and assistance duties.
Drivers must give identifying and vehicle information, show their license and reasonably help injured people obtain medical aid or arrange or provide transportation under MCL 257.619.
