Woman killed, three hospitalized in Holland Township crash
A 62-year-old Holland woman was killed and three others, including a 1-year-old boy, were hospitalized after a crash Tuesday evening.
The crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at Butternut Drive and James Street in Ottawa County, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said a GMC Acadia was driving at a high rate of speed when it collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee making a left turn onto James Street.
The woman who died was a passenger in the Jeep. Another passenger, a 62-year-old Holland man, was airlifted to a hospital. The Jeep's driver, a 22-year-old Holland woman, and the boy were also taken to a hospital.
The Acadia's driver, a 36-year-old Holland woman, was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed it or has information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 616-738-4003.
Michigan left-turn and speeding laws
A driver turning left in an intersection must yield to oncoming traffic already in the intersection or close enough to pose an immediate hazard. Under MCL 257.650, once the driver has yielded and given the required signal, other approaching drivers must yield to the turn. At a signalized intersection, the turning driver must first let opposing vehicles waiting to proceed straight on a green signal pass.
Drivers approaching an intersection must also obey the speed limit and drive at a speed that is reasonable for traffic and road conditions. MCL 257.627 requires a speed that allows a driver to stop within the assured clear distance ahead. Responsibility for a collision depends on the drivers' conduct and how it contributed to the crash, rather than the left turn alone.
