Three hospitalized in Allendale Township crash

Three people were hospitalized Monday, Oct. 5, after a two-vehicle crash left a 14-year-old girl and her father trapped in an SUV.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. at 64th Avenue and Pierce Street.

Deputies said a preliminary investigation found that a 69-year-old Allendale man driving west on Pierce Street pulled into the path of a northbound Jeep. The girl was driving the Jeep with her father as a passenger.

The Jeep came to rest against a home at the intersection, pinning the girl and her father inside. Allendale Township firefighters freed them, and both were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The Lexus driver was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, deputies said.

The crash remains under investigation.

When can a 14-year-old legally drive in Michigan?

Michigan allows supervised driving at 14 through a Level 1 learner's license or an authorized driver education permit.

Under MCL 257.310e, a teen must be at least 14 years and 9 months old, complete Segment 1 driver education, meet vision and health requirements and have written approval from a parent or legal guardian to obtain a Level 1 license. That license permits driving only with a licensed parent or legal guardian, or a licensed adult age 21 or older who has the parent's or guardian's permission.

The Secretary of State also allows Parent Driving Permits for students enrolled in Segment 1, which can begin at 14 years and 8 months. This permit is issued by the driver education provider and allows practice only with a licensed parent or guardian while the teen is enrolled in and attending the course.
