Suspect arrested after Huron Township hit-and-run

A pedestrian was critically injured Monday morning when a van hit them and fled. Police arrested a suspect that afternoon.

The Huron Township Department of Public Safety said the crash happened about 7:45 a.m. Sept. 14 on Pennsylvania Road between Huron River Drive and Wayne Road. The driver continued east after hitting the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.

Police said a 78-year-old Romulus resident was taken into custody at 12:57 p.m. and the suspected vehicle was recovered. The Downriver Crash Team is assisting with the investigation. Anyone with information can call Huron Township police at 734-753-4400.

Michigan drivers’ duties after an injury crash

A driver involved in a crash is legally required to stop and provide identifying information and assist inured people, even if they were not at fault in the crash.

Michigan’s stopping requirement under MCL 257.617 includes a limited exception when a driver reasonably and honestly believes staying would result in further harm. The driver must immediately report the crash to the nearest or most convenient police agency or officer and provide the required information.

An arrest does not establish guilt or automatically determine responsibility for an injured person’s losses.
