Rollover crash in Branch County injures two, starts car fire

Two cars collided and rolled over on Thursday, June 18, in Branch County.

The crash happened around 3:55 p.m. at the intersection of Fisher Road and Ray Quincy Road. A 22-year-old Hillsdale man was driving west when he did not stop at the intersection and hit another car, causing them both to veer off the road and rollover.

The Hillsdale man and the driver of the other car, a 33-year-old Bronson man, managed to get out of the cars and get to safety with minor injuries.

Another driver who was passing by saw the wreckage and noticed a small fire started in one of the cars. The passing driver stopped and helped put out the fire with a fire extinguisher they had in their car.

Both drivers involved in the crash were taken to a local hospital to treat their minor injuries.

Legal options after an accident

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means that without having to determine whose fault an accident is, people injured in the crash may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits.

These benefits can help cover economic losses from the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.

Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This would only be an option if the injuries meet the state’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death.
