Porsche driver critically injured in Zeeland Township crash
A 23-year-old Zeeland man was critically injured when his Porsche collided with a pickup truck pulling a trailer.
The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, on Byron Road near the I-196 exit ramp in Zeeland Township. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said an iPhone crash notification initially alerted deputies.
A 22-year-old Grand Rapids man driving a Chevrolet Silverado exited I-196 and turned left onto westbound Byron Road. An eastbound Porsche then hit the pickup, deputies said.
The Porsche driver was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital in critical condition.
The Silverado driver and his three passengers ran from the scene, deputies said. The passengers were two men, ages 36 and 20, and a 16-year-old boy, all from Grand Rapids.
Deputies located the four using a drone and police dogs, with help from the Holland Police Department. The pickup driver was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. The passengers were evaluated at the scene.
Byron Road was closed for about three hours while crews investigated and cleared the crash. The investigation remained ongoing Tuesday.
Michigan drivers’ duties after an injury crash
Michigan law requires drivers who know or have reason to believe they were involved in a crash to stop and fulfill their legal duties. Under MCL 257.617, a driver who reasonably and honestly believes remaining would cause further harm must immediately report to the nearest or most convenient police agency or officer to provide the required identifying information.
Drivers must provide their name, address, vehicle registration number and the vehicle owner’s name and address. They must also show their driver’s license and reasonably assist injured people in obtaining medical aid or transportation, as required by MCL 257.619.
These duties apply to the driver. A passenger’s presence in a vehicle does not, by itself, establish that the passenger violated the driver’s duty to stop.
