Passenger killed in Tuscola County crash
A passenger died and two drivers were seriously injured in a crash Monday evening.
Michigan State Police Caro Post troopers said the crash happened about 6:44 p.m. Oct. 5 at Unionville and West Akron roads in Fairgrove Township.
Their preliminary investigation found that a 55-year-old Akron woman was driving a east on Akron Road when she failed to stop at Unionville Road and hit a northbound car driven by a 41-year-old Saginaw woman.
A 35-year-old Saginaw passenger died at the scene. Both drivers were taken to hospitals outside the area with serious injuries.
Troopers believe alcohol may have been a factor. The investigation remains ongoing.
Michigan stopping duties at intersections
Michigan drivers approaching a stop sign must stop unless a police officer directs them to proceed. Under MCL 257.649, they must stop before the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection, at a marked stop line if there is no crosswalk or, if neither exists, at the point nearest the intersecting road where they can see approaching traffic.
Suspected impaired driving and civil claims
Michigan’s impaired-driving law prohibits driving on public roads while intoxicated or when visibly impaired. Suspected alcohol use alone does not establish a violation.
