Passenger killed, driver seriously injured in Highland Park crash
A 36-year-old man died and another man was seriously injured Thursday morning when their SUV hit a pole in Highland Park.
Highland Park police responded around 5:30 a.m. Aug. 27 on Woodward Avenue near the Davison Freeway. Police said the driver was heading north in a black Chevrolet Equinox when he crossed into the southbound lanes and hit the pole.
The front-seat passenger died in the crash. The driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Police believe alcohol was a factor.

Michigan no-fault benefits and a fault-based civil claim are separate. When a motor-vehicle crash causes death, dependents may qualify for survivor’s loss benefits under MCL 500.3108. Those benefits can replace qualifying economic support and ordinary services the deceased would have provided, subject to statutory limits and available coverage.
Michigan’s wrongful death law, MCL 600.2922, permits an estate’s personal representative to bring a civil claim when the statutory requirements are met. A suspected impaired-driving investigation is separate from civil and insurance questions and does not by itself establish civil fault, insurance coverage or compensation.
