Motorcyclist seriously injured in Grand Haven Township crash

A motorcyclist suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning after a crash with an SUV in Grand Haven Township.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded about 10:05 a.m. to 172nd Avenue near Timberview Drive. A 54-year-old man was riding a Harley-Davidson south on 172nd Avenue as a Toyota Highlander entered the roadway from Timberview Drive and the vehicles collided.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and was taken by Life EMS to a Muskegon-area hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. The SUV driver and a 75-year-old passenger were not injured.

Grand Haven Township Fire assisted with patient care and traffic control. The sheriff’s office said the crash remains under investigation.

Michigan no-fault benefits after a motorcycle crash

Michigan motorcycle policies do not include personal injury protection medical benefits. However, a motorcyclist injured in a crash involving a motor vehicle may qualify for PIP medical benefits, depending on the circumstances and without regard to fault under MCL 500.3105.

MCL 500.3107 covers reasonable charges for necessary care, recovery or rehabilitation, subject to the applicable policy and coverage limits.

A separate fault-based claim for noneconomic damages requires an injury that meets Michigan’s threshold under MCL 500.3135, such as death, serious impairment of body function or permanent serious disfigurement. That question is separate from available PIP benefits.
