Motorcyclist seriously injured in Columbia Township crash

A 36-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday night when his motorcycle hit a minibike carrying two people. 18-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the crash around 8:55 p.m. Sept. 12 to County Road 681 in Columbia Township.

Three motorcycles were heading north when they approached the minibike which had no lights or reflectors from behind.

One motorcyclist hit the minibike, causing it to swerve in front of his motorcycle. He was thrown from the motorcycle and taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Life EMS took both minibike riders, a 18-year-old and a 12-year-old for treatment of minor injuries.

Columbia Township Fire and Rescue and the Bangor Police Department assisted at the scene. Deputies said speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors. The investigation was ongoing at the time of the report.

Michigan lighting requirements for motorcycles and mopeds

Michigan law requires motorcycles and mopeds to have at least one compliant headlight and no more than two under MCL 257.685. Calling a vehicle a minibike does not establish its legal classification or whether it meets the requirements for public-road use. Its design and equipment matter.
