Motorcyclist seriously injured after two I-75 collisions in Detroit
A motorcyclist was in two separate accidents on I-75 in Detroit Friday and was seriously injured.
Michigan State Police troopers responded about 9:47 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, to I-75 south of the Davison Freeway. Their preliminary investigation found that the motorcycle had hit the back of another vehicle.
Witnesses told troopers the rider had been moving at a high rate of speed and weaving through traffic before the first crash. Afterward, the rider ran across the freeway lanes and was hit by another vehicle. They were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
State police said they did not know why the rider crossed the lanes. Investigators did not believe alcohol or drugs were factors, and the investigation was ongoing when they released their account.
Michigan no-fault coverage when a motorcyclist is hit on foot
Michigan’s motorcycle priority rule in MCL 500.3114(5) applies when a rider is injured while operating a motorcycle in an accident showing a motor vehicle’s involvement. It directs a personal injury protection claim first to the involved motor vehicle owner’s or registrant’s insurer, subject to coverage limits and exceptions. If someone is hit by a motor vehicle after getting off a motorcycle, the nonoccupant rule in MCL 500.3115 may require a different coverage analysis. An applicable personal or household auto policy may provide benefits; if none applies, the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan may be responsible. Where the person was when each injury occurred and which policies apply can determine who handles eligible medical expenses.
