Medical Event Injures Big Rapids Woman in Mecosta County Crash
A Big Rapids woman is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries in Green Charter Township following a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday, May 27.
The 68-year-old woman was on Northland Drive, just north of 19 Mile Road, at around 6:56 p.m. when the crash occurred. Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office deputies said the woman lost consciousness due to a medical condition, struck a tree, rolled and came to rest on a fence.
She was taken to Corewell Health Big Rapids Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
What Happens When a Crash Is Caused by a Medical Issue?
Michigan’s No-Fault Act may allow people injured in car crashes to qualify for Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits depending on the circumstances of the case. PIP can cover medical care, wage loss and certain household or replacement services, subject to statutory limits, policy terms and exceptions.
Whether a driver can be considered negligent in a crash involving a medical incident usually depends on whether the condition was reasonably preventable or foreseeable.
Even if a person was partially or fully at fault for a crash involving a medical issue, they may still be eligible for PIP benefits depending on coverage, priority rules and other facts.
