Man killed in Allendale Township crash

A 34-year-old Allendale man died and a 55-year-old Zeeland man was injured in a crash Friday evening.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at Lake Michigan Drive and 78th Avenue in Allendale Township.

A preliminary investigation found that the Allendale man was driving on 78th Avenue when he pulled into the path of a Zeeland man heading west on Lake Michigan Drive.

The Allendale man died from his injuries. The other driver was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 616-738-4003.

Michigan right-of-way rules at intersections

Stopping at a stop sign does not automatically give a driver the right to enter an intersection. Under MCL 257.649(8), unless a police officer directs otherwise, a driver must stop and then yield to vehicles already in the intersection or approaching closely enough to pose an immediate hazard while the driver moves across or within it.

Drivers with the right of way must still use reasonable care. Michigan Legal Center’s explanation of errors in Michigan crash reports discusses how inaccurate diagrams or descriptions of vehicle movements can affect a fault dispute.
