Man dies after Jackson intersection crash

A 76-year-old man died and another driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon.

The Jackson Police Department said officers were called around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 14 to Cooper and East Franklin streets.

Police said the 76-year-old driver ran a stop sign while heading east on East Franklin Street. His vehicle collided with a pickup driven by a 55-year-old man heading south on Cooper Street.

The older man was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The pickup driver was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening and released.

Michigan stop sign and right-of-way laws

Drivers must stop at a stop sign and yield before entering an intersection. Under MCL 257.649, that duty includes yielding to vehicles already in the intersection or approaching closely enough to pose an immediate hazard while the driver crosses. Coming to a complete stop does not, by itself, give a driver the right to proceed.
