Man, 20, killed in Tallmadge Township crash
A 20-year-old Coopersville man died after his vehicle left the road and hit a tree early Sunday.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 3:04 a.m. Oct. 4 to Leonard Street near 14th Avenue.
Investigators said he was driving west when he failed to make a curve east of 14th Avenue, left the road and hit a tree.
He was the only person in the vehicle and was trapped inside. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but he died at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
Michigan no-fault benefits after a fatal single-vehicle crash
Michigan personal injury protection (PIP) benefits can be available after a fatal single-vehicle crash without proving that another driver was at fault. Coverage still depends on the applicable insurance and statutory eligibility rules.
For an eligible claim, MCL 500.3107 permits payment of qualifying funeral and burial expenses between $1,750 and $5,000.
Under MCL 500.3108, people who were dependents at the time of death can qualify for benefits replacing lost financial support and paying reasonable expenses for ordinary, necessary services the deceased would have performed for them. Eligibility depends on Michigan’s dependency rules, not family relationship alone.
Choosing limited PIP medical coverage or a valid medical opt-out does not by itself eliminate funeral benefits or qualifying household-help benefits. Michigan Legal Center explains the distinction between medical coverage and other benefits in its discussion of Michigan no-fault replacement services.
