Jaws of life used to save passenger after collision between two pickups

Jaws of life used to save passenger after collision between two pickups

Firefighters used the jaws of life to extract injured people from Monday morning wreck in Speaker Township.

The accident happened at around 8:10 a.m., July 13 on the intersection of Galbraith Line Road and Brockway Road, according to Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office.

The preliminary investigation found that a 54-year-old Oxford man driving a Ford F-150 east on Galbraith Line Road failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a Chevrolet Silverado driving south. In the Silverado was a 67-year-old man driving and a 63-year-old passenger.

While the drivers of both cars were able to escape the wreck safely, the Speaker Township Fire Department used hydraulic rescue tools called the jaws of life to extract the Silverado passenger. All of the motorists were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment.

Deputies said they did not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. The sheriff's office withheld the names of those involved while the investigation continues.

Legal options after a Michigan crash

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means an injured person may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without first proving who caused the crash, if they were injured in the crash.

A separate claim for noneconomic losses, including pain and suffering, may be available against an at-fault driver only when the injury involves death, serious impairment of body function or permanent serious disfigurement.
