38-Year-Old Houghton Lake Worker Dies After Dead Tree Falls
A 38-year-old automotive technician has died after a dead tree fell on him while he helped free a car stuck in a wooded area near Houghton Lake, according to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
MIOSHA says the July 7 worker was helping recover the car when a strap was secured around a dead tree. The tree then fell and struck the technician.
The agency lists the death as Michigan's 21st workplace fatality of 2026. WNEM reported that the worker's name has not been released. MIOSHA says its public fatality-table descriptions are preliminary and are not its final investigation findings.
The public record reviewed does not identify the employer, exact worksite, vehicle owner, or who directed the recovery. It also does not establish why the tree was used or whether MIOSHA will issue findings or citations.
Legal Issues After a Fatal Vehicle-Recovery Work Incident
Because this death happened during work, workers' compensation is usually the first legal system families need to understand. MCL 418.321 addresses compensation when a work-related personal injury results in death. MCL 418.131 generally makes workers' compensation the exclusive remedy against an employer for an ordinary workplace-injury claim, subject to the statute's intentional-tort exception.
That does not decide whether someone other than the employer could have legal responsibility. MCL 418.827 addresses claims against a legally liable third party. Here, that question would depend on later facts about the vehicle recovery, the worksite, the tree, and who controlled those parts of the event.
If evidence ultimately supports a wrongful-act or negligence claim, MCL 600.2922 governs a Michigan wrongful-death action through the estate. For related background, see Michigan Legal Center's pages on workers' compensation and Michigan wrongful death deadlines.
