Holland motorcyclist critically injured in US-31 crash
A 73-year-old Holland man suffered critical injuries Saturday in a Grand Haven motorcycle crash.
Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies and Grand Haven Township firefighters responded at 10:57 a.m. Aug. 8 to US-31 and 152nd Avenue.
According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcyclist was traveling north on US-31 when a 46-year-old West Olive man entered the highway from 152nd Avenue in a pickup pulling a trailer.
Deputies said the pickup entered the motorcycle’s path, forcing the rider to lay down the motorcycle before sliding into the side of the truck.
The motorcyclist was hospitalized with critical injuries. The pickup driver was not hurt.
Northbound US-31 was temporarily closed and later reopened.

Michigan law treats an injured motorcyclist differently from an occupant of a car. In motorcycle crashes with other vehicles, MCL 500.3114 creates a special insurer priority order for personal injury protection (PIP) benefits. Coverage limits, exclusions and the available policies can affect which insurer must pay.
A fault-based claim is different. Under MCL 500.3135, a person may seek noneconomic damages when an injury results in death, serious impairment of body function or permanent serious disfigurement. The claimant must also prove fault.
