Farmington schools mourn teen killed in pedestrian crash

Farmington Public Schools is mourning Daniel Grechin-Pirogov, a 15-year-old North Farmington High School sophomore who died after a pickup truck struck him while he was crossing Orchard Lake Road Wednesday night.

The Farmington Police Department said the crash happened about 8 p.m. Oct. 28 at Orchard Lake Road and Shiawassee Street. A northbound pickup struck Grechin-Pirogov in the crosswalk, according to the city. First responders attempted lifesaving measures before he was taken to a hospital, where he died. Farmington Hills police and fire personnel assisted.

The school district said Grechin-Pirogov attended Forest Elementary School and Warner Middle School before North Farmington. He also participated in Oakland Early College and the district’s Student Round Table, where Superintendent Kelly Coffin said he offered thoughtful feedback and advocated for students.

Coffin described him as “an exceptional young man who made a lasting impression on those who knew him.”

The driver is cooperating with detectives as they investigate the circumstances, the city said. Witnesses can contact Special Operations Commander Patrick Spelman at 248-699-5150 or pspelman@farmgov.com.

Who may bring a Michigan wrongful-death action?

Under Michigan’s wrongful-death statute, if a death is caused by another person’s wrongful act, neglect or fault and the person who died could have brought a claim if they had survived, the action must be brought by a personal representative appointed for the estate. The statute identifies who may be entitled to damages and sets procedures for notice and distribution. Investigators have not determined fault in this crash, and these facts alone do not establish a civil claim.

Families seeking background on how estate authority and deadlines can differ by claim type can read Michigan Legal Center’s guide to Michigan wrongful-death deadlines. The correct deadline depends on the specific claim, dates and parties involved.
