Michigan property protection insurance when a vehicle damages a home
Michigan property protection insurance may cover accidental damage to a house caused by a motor vehicle. MCL 500.3121 makes qualifying benefits payable without regard to fault and permits compensation for physical damage and loss of use. Benefits can include reasonable repair costs or depreciated replacement value and applicable loss-of-use value, subject to a $1 million limit under one policy for all tangible property damaged in one accident.
Property owners generally claim these benefits first from insurers of the vehicle’s owner or registrant, then from insurers of its operator. Statutory exclusions and policy facts can change which losses are payable.
MCL 500.3145 requires an action for property protection insurance benefits to be started within one year after the accident. Property owners should promptly document the damage, estimates, temporary repairs and insurer communications rather than rely on a pending claim to protect every deadline.
