Driver dies in Grand Rapids crash and fire
A driver died Sunday morning, Sept. 20, after their car hit a tree and caught fire.
The Grand Rapids Police Department said officers and firefighters responded around 7:10 a.m. near Century Avenue SW and McKendrick Street SW.
The driver, who was alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not released the driver’s identity or determined what caused the crash in the available reports.

Michigan benefits and claims after a fatal single-car crash
Eligible dependents may receive Michigan no-fault survivor’s loss benefits after a fatal single-car crash without proving that another driver caused it. Eligibility depends on the applicable insurance coverage and statutory requirements.
Under MCL 500.3108, those benefits can replace financial support that dependents would have received from the person who died. They can also cover expenses for services that person would have provided, up to a $20 daily limit. Survivor’s loss benefits have an overall maximum and are not payable beyond the first three years after the crash.
Under MCL 600.2922, another party’s wrongful act, neglect or fault must have caused the death. A fatal crash alone does not establish that claim.
