Big Rapids motorcyclist injured when deer hits motorcycle in Mecosta County

A 37-year-old Big Rapids man was injured Wednesday when a deer struck his motorcycle in Mecosta County.

The crash happened Wednesday, July 8, in the area of 195th Avenue and Grass Lake Road, according to the Mecosta County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the man was traveling north on 195th Avenue when the deer struck the right side of his motorcycle.

The rider injured his right foot and ankle. He went to a hospital on his own for treatment.

Big Rapids City Fire and Rescue, Mecosta County EMS and Mecosta Central Dispatch assisted the Sheriff's Office.

Does Michigan no-fault insurance cover a motorcycle crash involving a deer?

Usually not. Ordinary Personal Injury Protection benefits for a motorcycle rider generally require evidence that a car, truck or other motor vehicle was involved.

Michigan's Insurance Code distinguishes motorcycles from motor vehicles. If the crash involved a motor vehicle in addition to the motorcycle, then the situation could change.

Michigan's motorcycle insurance statute, MCL 500.3103, requires insurers that sell motorcycle coverage to offer first-party medical benefits. Whether those benefits are available depends on whether the coverage was purchased, the coverage limits and the terms of the policy.
