9-year-old hit by car after leaving school bus in Detroit

A 9-year-old boy was hospitalized Wednesday after being hit by a car shortly after getting off a school bus.

The Detroit Police Department said the crash happened about 3 p.m. Sept. 30 near Kentfield Street and St. Martins Avenue on the city’s west side.

Police said the boy was crossing in front of the bus when a car driven by a man in his 20s hit him.

He was listed in stable condition. The driver stayed at the scene, and police were investigating the crash.

Michigan’s rules for stopping near school buses

Under MCL 257.682, drivers approaching a stopped school bus from either direction must stop at least 20 feet away when its two red warning lights at the same level flash alternately. They must stay stopped until the bus starts moving again or the flashing signals turn off.

Bus video can help document the signals and surrounding traffic. Michigan Legal Center’s explanation of evidence in bus accident claims describes why video may need to be requested separately from a police report.
