Defending Your Legal Rights Following an Accident in Michigan

While dealing with the aftermath of an automobile accident in Michigan is sure to be unpleasant and irritating, there are certain essential steps you can take to ensure your rights are protected. Victims of vehicle accidents should take immediate action to protect their legal rights since even seemingly slight injuries can have far-reaching consequences.

Following are some things to think about if you've been harmed in an accident:

  • Alert the authorities: If you or a passenger in your automobile receive injuries and require medical assistance, a police officer can help you call for an ambulance. The symptoms of some wounds don't appear until weeks later.
  • Write down what you see: If you can, snap a ton of photos and film a lot of footage. Take pictures of the accident scene, the automobiles, and any injuries you sustained.
  • Swap phone numbers and email addresses: If you want to make a complete report with the police, you'll need the other driver's information, such as their name, address, phone number, insurance provider, license plate, and registration.
  • See if you're covered by insurance: Investigate the No-Fault insurance provisions in Michigan. Even if your no-fault insurance covers your permitted healthcare expenditure benefits (medical expenditures), work disruption benefits, and survivor's loss benefits, you can still submit a claim against the individual who caused your accident for compensation, such as pain and suffering.
  • Get in touch with a lawyer: If you've been in a car accident in Michigan and want to start gathering evidence for a prospective claim, don't wait to speak with a lawyer. And, until you have met with an attorney who specializes in injury claims, you should not sign any settlement offers relating to your vehicle accident.

Contact a vehicle accident lawyer in Detroit if you've been harmed in an accident that wasn't your fault. They can help you file a claim and defend your rights in court.
