Car Accidents in Michigan

Benton Harbor, MI – Car Accident on I-94 near I-196 Ends in InjuriesEach year, Michigan experiences tens of thousands of motor vehicle accidents that result in serious injuries. Unfortunately, those involved in these crashes often face tremendous physical pain, emotional distress, and financial hardships. Many of these incidents are caused by the reckless behavior of other drivers. The most common factors leading to motor vehicle accidents across the state include several critical behaviors and situations that compromise road safety. These factors are as follows:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs: Operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs significantly diminishes a driver’s ability to react quickly and make sound judgments, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  • Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit reduces a driver's reaction time and increases the severity of collisions, making it one of the leading contributors to accidents.
  • Distracted driving: Engaging in activities that divert attention from driving, such as eating, adjusting the radio, or chatting with passengers, poses a serious risk to the safety of all road users.
  • Using a mobile phone while driving: Texting or talking on a mobile phone not only distracts drivers but also diverts their focus from the road, leading to dangerous situations that can result in accidents.
  • Falling asleep at the wheel: Fatigue can impair a driver’s alertness and reaction time, and drowsy driving is just as dangerous as driving under the influence. When drivers fall asleep, they lose complete control of their vehicle, often with devastating consequences.

Addressing these factors is crucial for enhancing road safety and reducing the number of accidents statewide.
