Car Accidents in Michigan

Burton, MI – Collision blocks Columbine Ave at E McLean AveCar accidents are a frequent occurrence in Michigan, with thousands of incidents reported each year. According to the Michigan State Police, there were over 292,000 traffic crashes in 2023, resulting in more than 75,000 injuries and over 900 fatalities. Understanding the common causes of these accidents can help take preventive measures and seek justice if you become a victim.

One of the leading causes of car accidents in Michigan is distracted driving. Activities such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, or even adjusting the radio can divert a driver's attention from the road, leading to collisions. In 2023, distracted driving was responsible for a significant number of crashes.

Speeding is another major factor contributing to car accidents. Exceeding the speed limit reduces a driver's ability to react to sudden changes in traffic conditions and increases the severity of collisions. The faster a vehicle is moving, the longer it takes to stop, making it more difficult to avoid an accident. In Michigan, speeding is a common cause of both fatal and non-fatal accidents.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs also poses a severe risk on the roads. Impaired drivers have reduced reaction times, impaired judgment, and decreased coordination, all of which can lead to accidents. Michigan has stringent laws against driving under the influence, but despite this, impaired driving continues to be a significant problem.

Weather conditions in Michigan can also contribute to car accidents. Snow, ice, rain, and fog can create hazardous driving conditions, leading to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Drivers who fail to adjust their driving habits to accommodate these conditions are at a higher risk of being involved in an accident.
