Our thoughts go out to those harmed in this accident.
The death toll from traffic accidents in the United States reached over 43,000 last year, the highest annual total in the past 16 years. The fatality toll from speeding, drunk driving, and inattentive driving is also climbing. These tragic statistics surpass those seen in 2005, according to the most current finished and ended data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Over 3,500 people lost their lives because at least one driver was not paying attention, and this number increased by 12% from the previous year. The NHTSA has developed a variety of safety efforts to encourage safe driving and bring attention to the risks of distracted driving. Despite the best efforts of government agencies and this yearly assessment by traffic specialists, the number of accidents that result in serious injuries continues to rise, and hundreds more accidents are never reported to authorities.
Unfortunately, very populous cities like Detroit also report abysmal figures. In fact, the metropolitan Detroit region is home to 80% of the state's most dangerous junctions. While overall accident victims have reduced by nearly 19% in the Detroit metro region, the number of deaths has climbed by 10% to 1,084. This is the highest number of fatalities since 2007.
