Southfield, MI (January 7, 2024) – A significant motor vehicle accident reported early Saturday morning involving a fleeing driver claimed the lives of two people. The accident was reported by the Michigan State police South post troopers at approximately 1:30 a.m. on January 6.
According to police reports, a 2006 Ford Super Duty pickup truck was stolen from behind a gas station located on 8 Mile Road. While exiting the gas station parking lot, the driver backed up and almost struck a police cruiser. Police attempted to pull over the vehicle. However, the driver fled the scene. As a result, a pursuit ensued on Lodge Freeway. As the vehicle continued forward, the driver shut off their headlights, made a U-turn, and began driving south on the highway's northbound lanes.
As the vehicle traveled through the area near Civic Center Drive, it collided with a 2011 GMC Terrain. Two people in the Terrain, identified as a 43-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, were fatally injured. Both of the victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford pickup truck, identified as a 35-year-old man, and his 29-year-old passenger were both injured. The two victims were transported to area hospitals for emergency care. The police are currently investigating the incident.
