Boating Accident Injuries in Michigan

Manistee, MI - Three Hurt in Boat Accident at First St Beach Pier

Several Michiganders own boats and take pleasure in cruising around the state's numerous lakes and other bodies of water because of the state's convenient proximity to these attractions. Unfortunately, these ships are not always risk-free, especially when piloted by inexperienced individuals.

U.S. Coast Guard data shows an increase from 92 incidents in 2013 to 125 in 2016, with a corresponding increase from 21 fatalities in 2012 to 38 in 2016.

However, if their boating disaster was the result of another party's carelessness in Michigan, injured passengers on commercial or recreational vessels may be entitled to financial compensation. Accidents that occur on boats are governed by Admiralty or Maritime Law, a separate branch of law. If you need help understanding these rules and your alternatives, talk to a seasoned Michigan personal injury attorney.

In the meanwhile, victims should be aware that the owner or operator of a private boat may be held accountable for injuries sustained on board. Concerns that may arise because of injuries incurred in incidents involving private boats include:

  • Have they tested the motorist for alcohol or drugs?
  • Was there a sufficient number of life jackets and other safety equipment on the boat?
  • Did the boat's captain and owner take care to maintain it seaworthy?
