Shingleton, MI (March 18, 2022) - A man was found dead after a house fire in Shingleton on Thursday, March 17. The fire was reported in the morning hours on Percy Road.

According to local sources, the identity of the victim has not been released pending the notification of family. Emergency responders were dispatched to the house to find it fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were not able to put the fire out. Therefore, the house was considered a total loss. Once they were able to enter the structure, they found the deceased victim.

The Michigan State Police and members of Alger County EMS along with the AuTrain Township Fire Department assisted at the scene. At this time, police continue to investigate the details of the incident.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the victim at this time.

Michigan Structure Fires

No matter where a fire begins, it can prove to be extremely dangerous for everyone involved. An average of more than 2,600 people are killed each year in structure fires. Additionally, about 11,220 people are injured each year.

In the United States, over a quarter of the fires reported from 2015 to 2019 occurred in home environments. In addition, about 75% of civilian fire deaths and almost 75% of reported civilian injuries related to fires during that same time period were related to home structure fires. Fire departments across the country respond to hundreds of thousands of structure fires every year. On average, approximately 354,000 structure fires are reported annually.

A fire may be caused by someone’s negligence, for example, a landlord who did not obey fire safety laws or an employer who did not use proper safety regulations. In this case, a deceased victim’s surviving family members may be able to collect financial compensation for the loss of their loved one. Compensation can cover some or all of the costs associated with their family member’s death.

Wrongful Death Attorneys in Shingleton

Usually, those who lose their lives in fire-related incidents often do so because of severe burns or smoke inhalation. Sometimes both of these things combined can take a person’s life. When victims are killed in structure fires, their families are left to grieve and pick up the pieces. Surviving family members usually find themselves stuck with medical bills and funeral costs. They may even be without a source of income they once relied on.
