Sterling Heights, MI (December 6, 2021) - A driver lost their life in a five-car chain-reaction collision in Sterling Heights. The driver was reportedly driving in the wrong direction on M-59, according to reports.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:05 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, just west of Mound Road. Officials reported that a 50-year-old Hamtramck resident was headed east in the westbound lanes in their silver Acura, causing a severe multi-vehicle collision.
The Acura collided with a black Chevrolet Colorado before they were both struck by three other vehicles in a chain-reaction wreck. The driver of the Acura was transported to a nearby medical center where they were pronounced deceased.
The driver of one of the other involved vehicles, identified as a resident of Holly, aged 24, was transported to an area medical center with serious injuries, police said.
The other involved drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with officials. Police continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
The westbound lanes of M-59 were closed from Van Dyke Avenue to Dequindre Road for approximately five hours while crews worked to clear debris from the roadway.
