According to information from the Governors Highway Safety Administration, pedestrian deaths across the nation are currently increasing. Fatalities that occur due to pedestrian collisions throughout the United States rose approximately 21% over the past year. This is the largest annual increase ever recorded. These numbers are highly alarming, especially in light of the significant reduction in traffic during the 2020 pandemic.
In the state of Michigan last year, nearly 200 pedestrians lost their lives due to fatal traffic collisions. The previous year, 2019, that number sat at around 150.
A reason for the recent surge in pedestrian deaths in Michigan and across the United States may be attributed to the growing number of people who choose to utilize electronic devices while behind the wheel. More and more drivers are becoming perilously distracted by their phones, GPS systems, and other activities that tend to take their attention away from the road. Since the year 2016, the number of fatal traffic accidents involving cell phones in the United States rose approximately 87%. Non-fatal accidents related to the use of cell phones rose around 48%.
