Delta County, MI – Four Injured in Buggy and Pickup Truck Crash on 18th Rd

Delta County, MI (April 15, 2025) – Four people were injured on Saturday, April 12, when a horse-drawn Amish buggy and a pickup truck collided along 18th Road near H.25 Road in the Riverland area of Delta County.

Authorities with the Delta County Sheriff’s Office received the call around 3:28 p.m. and responded to the scene. According to officials, both the buggy and the truck were heading eastbound when the pickup rear-ended the buggy. The impact caused significant injuries to four female passengers who were riding in the horse-drawn buggy.

Three of the four injured individuals remain hospitalized, with two reportedly in critical condition. The driver of the pickup truck, a man whose identity has not been released, was not injured in the crash. No update was provided regarding the condition of the horse that was pulling the buggy. The accident is still under investigation. The Michigan State Police’s Accident Reconstructionist is assisting the Delta County Sheriff’s Office in reviewing the details of the crash.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Buggy and Vehicle Crashes in Michigan

Delta County, MI – Four Injured in Buggy and Pickup Truck Crash on 18th RdWhile relatively uncommon, crashes involving horse-drawn buggies do occur in rural areas of Michigan, particularly in regions with Amish communities. These incidents are often severe due to the lack of protection offered by the buggy compared to motor vehicles. Michigan has seen several similar collisions in recent years, emphasizing the dangers when modern traffic interacts with slower, more vulnerable forms of transportation.

Understanding the risks and aftermath of buggy-related crashes is important for public awareness:

  • Lack of Protection in Buggies: Unlike cars, horse-drawn buggies offer little structural protection. Riders are highly exposed in the event of a crash, which can lead to serious or life-threatening injuries even at lower speeds.
  • Visibility Challenges: Buggies are often less visible than modern vehicles, especially during dusk, dawn, or poor weather conditions. Although many are equipped with reflective materials, visibility remains a concern on winding or rural roads.
  • Limited Reaction Time: Motorists may not anticipate encountering a slow-moving buggy. If a driver is distracted or speeding, there may be insufficient time to brake or swerve, leading to rear-end or side-impact collisions.
  • Multiple Victims in One Vehicle: Buggies often carry multiple passengers, which means one incident can result in several injuries or hospitalizations, as seen in this Delta County crash.
  • Investigative Complexity: Crashes involving non-motorized vehicles may require detailed accident reconstruction, especially to determine fault, speed, and whether proper visibility measures were used.
